Consulting

The four partners of BEI can provide expert opinions concerning the operation, maintenance, safety of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. Such areas include: boilers, machine safety, combustion, energy system performance, etc. We perform on-site consulting in the form of in-plant evaluations.

List of Publications and Computer Programs

Boiler Efficiency Improvement (Revised 1991) -- 300 pages -- $25

This manual is written for the engineer, plant manager, or experienced boiler operator as a guide to improving and maintaining top boiler efficiency. This manual covers boiler types, methods of efficiency improvement, boiler testing and instrumentation, controls, burners, water and fuel quality and treatment, and analysis. Economics and cost/benefit to recommendations are stressed. Appendix contains the most complete set of efficiency chart available, sources of instrumentation and complete boiler audit forms.

Boiler Efficiency Improvement (Operator Manual) -- 84 pages -- $10

This manual is a condensed version of No. 1 (above) written for operators. I covers the same topics with the exception of equipment design and analysis. Methods for efficiency improvement are covered in the following format: The problem and why it causes inefficiency, description of the equipment involved, and how to correct the problem. Includes complete summary check list for boiler operation/maintenance, complete set of efficiency charts, and list of instrumentation/sources. It has been uses as a text for a one-day, in-house seminar for operators for numerous companies by the authors.

Fuel Oil Manual for Boiler Operation -- 58 pages -- $5

This monograph should provide the operator with a basic knowledge of fuel oil properties and proper treatments. The monograph begins with the basic theories of combustion and is followed by a basic description of fuels. This description is used to present various fuel problems. Finally, the fuel description and problem description are used as a basis for describing appropriate remedies.

Water Manual for Boiler Operation (Revised 1989)-- 127 pages -- $25

An introduction to water treatment for boiler operation. The subject is complex and the operators of boilers will need professional help from time to time for the solution of specific problems. The material is designed to acquaint the operator with the requirements for water treatment and the techniques available for his use.

Boiler Adjustment for High Efficiency -- 76 pages -- $10

This manual is written for engineers and operators. It describes the hardware for making boiler adjustments and a detailed procedure of adjustment to optimize the combined boiler system/auxiliary equipment.

Steam Efficiency Improvement (Revised 1987) -- 70 pages -- $10

This manual is written for those charged with the design and operation of steam systems. It describes the procedures for identifying losses associated with the transmission and use of steam. Simple charts and tables are given for estimating heat loss in steam systems, including: processes, steam transmission lines, traps, and condensate return systems.

Boiler Efficiency Management Program -- 26 pages -- $5

This manual describes a management program to improve and maintain boiler efficiency at peak conditions.

HVAC Efficiency Improvement (Revised 1992) -- 274 pages -- $25

This manual is written for the engineer, plant manager, or HVAC as a guide to improving and maintaining peak performance. The manual covers a description of generating and distribution equipment and describes specific ways to reduce costs. Various topics including savings in electric costs, cooling tower operation, and water treatment are covered. Chapters devoted to energy management systems, control systems, and balancing are also included.

Electrical System Improvement (1992) -- 203 pages -- $25

This manual is written for the engineer, plant manager, or boiler operator as a guide to improving and maintaining peak performance of electrical systems. This manual includes a description of electric costs, motors, direct heating, lighting, HVAC systems, compressed air, and congeneration. Hundreds of specific opportunities for reducing electrical cost are given.

Engineering Fundamentals in Everyday Language (1992)--241 pages -- $25

This book contains more than 200 pages of numerous charts, illustrations, and examples to make the subject easy to master.

NOx Control Technologies for Boilers (1992) -- 123 pages -- $25

This text gives a review of available NOx control technologies for boilers including a discussion of the underlying principles, the practical limitations of implementing each method, and expected effectiveness.

Boiler Efficiency Improvement Computer Program -- 1 disk -- $100

A program to computer the potential improvement in fuel savings and dollar savings by boiler tuning and equipment retrofit. The calculations are based on the fuel loss test method. Water quality recommendations are also included. Available on floppy disk for IBM compatible computers.

Low Temperature Heat Recovery Savings & Sizing Computer Program -- 1 disk -- $200

This program calculates the size of all components in a direct-spray, low temperature heat recovery system for a boiler. Potential energy savings are also computed. A manual is included. Available on floppy disk for IBM compatible computers.

Economic Thickness of Insulation Computer program -- 2 disk -- $100

This program calculates the economic thickness of insulation based on economic data input into the program. The user can investigate alternative methods of insulation and determine incremental savings. The program was developed by TIMA and is available on two floppy disks for IBM compatible computers. A 188 page manual is included.

Performance of Chillers Computer Program -- 1 disk -- $100

This computer program calculates the compressor efficiency and coefficient of performance of single-stage compressor driven chillers. This equipment includes most roof-top units, refrigeration systems, screw-compressor systems, and single stage-centrifugal systems. The input to the program is refrigerant type, evaporator and condenser pressure, and outlet temperature of refrigerant from compressor. It allows operators of this type to develop efficiency/load curves for proper loading of machines. It also allows pinpointing of inefficient operation.

Water Quality Computer Program -- 1 disk -- $100

This program will evaluate all chemical requirements, makeup rates, and condensate loss for a boiler plant.
